New Start Program


“Employment Services for Success.”


HomeFirst’s New Start Program (formerly known as  Streets Team) is a program designed to assist clients to achieve self-sufficiency and ultimately housing stability. The main focus of the program will be to assist those applicants who demonstrate a strong interest in becoming employed.  New Start provides a shelter stay for up to six months, employment services, and supportive services to 30 homeless individuals. Applicants accepted into the program are expected to volunteer a minimum of 24 hours a week at the Boccardo Reception Center performing janitorial or kitchen services. In exchange for their volunteer hours, clients of the program will receive shelter and individualized employment services and counseling.

The program allows clients to sharpen and add skills, and to gain work experience. New Start provides the opportunity for clients to learn new things, meet new people, take on new responsibilities, and show potential employers and co-workers what they can do. Clients will be trained on their position and will attend workshops relating to employment to make themselves more employable. Workshops cover a variety of topics, such as, resume building, interview skills, communicating with co-workers, problem solving, and team-building. Clients have access to an Employment Specialist who will provide an individualized plan of action and one-on-one job coaching.


New Start members will have the opportunity to gain exposure to and build meaningful relationships with potential employers. HomeFirst employment program will facilitate interaction with potential employers and actively pursue employers to consider our team members for employment. New Start members have the opportunity to gain a positive reference from program staff of the HomeFirst Streets Team. As Team members progress through the program, their participation, work ethic, and abilities will be assessed and included in their reference. New Start members will be provided referrals to various agencies and as needed for additional supportive services.

HomeFirst staff works proactively  with Clients to establish a plan to make sure that goals are being met.

Application Process:

Interviews are held every Tuesday at 1:00 pm at the Boccardo Reception Center. Prospective clients are to fill out the application and are to apply in person. Acceptance into the program will depend on space availability.
