Shelter Worker - Temporary
Position: Shelter Worker – Cold Weather Shelter Program (CWSP)
Location: (A) Sunnyvale Armory, and (B) Gilroy Armory
Supervisor: Shelter Manager
This is a temporary position, November 1, 2008 - March 31, 2009. Must be available swing and graveyard shifts, and to work holidays
Duties and responsibilities
- Responsible for the implementation of shelter rules and security of the facility
- Provides information and referrals to shelter guests
- Distributes clothing, linens, toiletries, and any other items supplied by the program
- Provides general site clean up; reports any maintenance or janitorial needs to the Shift Manager or General Manager
- Assures safety of guests and safe operation of shelter
- Conducts room and facility checks
- Assists with monitoring meals and determining meal counts where appropriate
- Completes intake of homeless guests as required
- Assists with set up and break down for any special events or activities
- Handles all emergencies by contacting appropriate staff/agencies
- Reports any incidents and completes incident report
- Represents EHC and the program appropriately to volunteers, donors, outside agencies and the general public
- Accepts donations and hands out donation receipts
- Assists with office-related tasks as needed
- Attends meetings, workshops and trainings as requested
- Works swing & graveyard shifts, and Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years
- Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor
Qualifications
- Sensitivity to the needs of homeless individuals
- Ability to work with people of diverse social backgrounds and professional rank
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions
- Basic oral and written communication skills
- Must be computer literate
- Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
- Employment is contingent on passing required background check
